Someone at work posted this on our internal project manager screen the other day. One word comes to mind while watching this: BRILLIANT! Not only the concept of the this video clever, but the overall production of the video itself is impressive. Too bad Helvetica didn’t get any screen time.

If you’re in the design business, then this miracle product is just for you (and your clients). Check out this video about making your logo bigger…and other great design products.

Designing A Beard

Build A Beard Workshop

Build a Beard Workshop helps real people in developing countries by donating money each time a user submits a unique beard photo to the site. With their nicely designed website, users can choose from a variety of beard styles, download one, print it out and paste it on their face. Once the user uploads the photo to the site, a donation is made in their honor.

What a great way to help developing countries in a fun way. Make sure you take a look at the Beard Gallery while you’re there. Enjoy!

While enjoying my daily visit to Design*Sponge yesterday I came across an article written about Orange Beautiful and their ultra stylish 2009 calendars. After drooling over the use of type to design a simple calendar, I explored the other products at Orange Beautiful. If you are into type, design and paper goods as much as I am, you seriously need to check them out.

PlusMoreCollective is a great collection of design ideas, products, websites, etc…

According to the sites creator:

PlusMoreCollective is a coffee shop, a classroom, a break in your day, a recess if you will.

The twist that comes along with PlusMoreCollective is that anyone can post to it.

I particularly enjoy the posts that highlight typographic products (like the belt buckle. I’ve got to get one of those).

Enjoy!

KERN - Typographic Pinback Button Set

I created a new set of graphic design pinback buttons this morning revolving around the importance of kerning type. These two pinback buttons are a perfect set for the typographer in all of us. Buy both buttons ($2.49 each) and space them as you see fit.

These typographic pinback buttons feature the typeface Avenir on a mocha brown background. They are perfect for bags, backpacks, jackets or as gifts for that type-lover in your life.

Letterpress Photograph

Letterpress Photograph ($8)

One website I visit on a weekly basis is Design*Sponge. Design*Sponge is a daily website dedicated to home and product design run by Brooklyn-based writer, Grace Bonney. A visit to her website will immediately greet you with a sense of style and design.

What really caught my eye a while back (February 5th) was a mini trend on Numbers and Letters. Grace has truly found the best of the best in typographic products to decorate your house and display a love for typographic form. Her Numbers and Letters mini trend details dozens of great products with large photos and links to start purchasing.

I immediately was drawn to the Letterpress Photo ($8) and will soon be purchasing said photo to decorate my home-office.

While eating my tasty toasted veggie sandwich from Quiznos last Friday, I looked down to start reading the packaging it came in and the menu that came with it. I was immediately greeted by Helvetica.

Helvetica appeared on both the packaging and menu (and after further investigation, most of their printed collateral material). While “Mmmmm…Toasty” is a thing of Quiznos’ past, the use of Helvetica in their designs is in.

Quiznos, well known for its tasty toasted sub sandwiches, has (in my mind) done a fairly decent job of keeping their designs (print, web and commercials) clean, simple, readable and appealing to the masses. And these 4 points (coincidentally enough) are very similar points that are made for designers who are Pro Helvetica (it is clean, simple, readable and appealing to the masses).

While using Helvetica isn’t much of a typographic risk (in this instance), the use of it here is quite conceivable. Some designs might require a unique typeface to get dominate the space and get the emotional message across. However, using Helvetica on this menu compliments the design and keeps the focus on the tasty photo (minus the meat) and message.

There is a time and place to use Helvetica, and Quiznos has landed on theirs.
